Having photos as a memory keepsake is a must, but let’s face it… not many people feel completely comfortable in front of the camera. Myself included! That’s why I’m behind the camera 😉. So let me help you and your partner in preparing for your session (or wedding portraits) and getting those amazing candid photos.

Prepare and Embrace
Yes, photos can be awkward. Mentally prepare to feel a little awkward and embrace the time together. Laugh, be silly, and have fun with it! No matter what, trust that I will guide you through this process as well. I always tell couples, this may feel a little odd, but it’ll look amazing in photos. This time is your time together. If you have fun during the session, your photos will show that.
As a side note, I recommend taking me up on the offer to meet in-person (or video if remote) so that you can get more comfortable with me! I find that if I don’t meet with couples, it usually takes the first 15 minutes or so for comfort to set in. During these meet-and-greets, you can get a sense of my vibe and discuss what you want during your session.
Quality Time Together
Consider this time as quality time together. Think about it! You’re dressed up and going to a location you don’t normally go to. This is basically a date so why not treat it as such. Yes, there’s a third wheel there, but who wouldn’t want to document quality time with your loved one. And like with all dates, you’re interacting with each other. The more you interact with each other naturally, the less you notice me and my camera. For those getting married, I especially stress that the portraits could be a time to slow down and breathe together.
Movement is Key
We all want those candid photos and that requires movement. When you are hanging out with each other, you don’t stand or sit still. You’re hugging, talking, kissing, caressing. That’s what we want to see! I love when couples send me inspo photos and more often than not, those inspo shots are a result of candid photos. So let’s not copy the photos, but prompt movement that will embody the emotion in the photo. I can provide prompts as a base, but couples are always welcome to make it their own. You decide you want to stop walking and kiss… go for it. I ask you to hug and it turns into tickling… amazing. Let’s create moments that allow you to be candid.
My ultimate goal is for couples to enjoy their session and photos and I will make that happen. But with these simple tips, this may help start the comfort and understanding. So what are you waiting for… let’s connect today.
